What is Black Forest ?

Black Forest is a type of cake that is made from chocolate cake that has layers of cherries and whipped cream sandwiched between the layers. Black Forest Cake also typically makes use of a type of  cherry brandy called Kirsch. The cake, which is called ‘Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte’ in German, gets its name from said liquor! The cherries used to make this cherry brandy come from the Schwarzwäld, or Black Forest, Mountain Range in Germany. Kirsch, while not mandatory in Canada or the US, is mandatory in Germany. For a bakery or store to label the cake as a true ‘Black Forest Cake’ the addition of Kirsch is an absolute, and legal, must.

This Black Forest Chocolate Cherry Milkshake utilizes all the core black forest flavors – chocolate, cherries, and whipped cream! The chocolate comes from the scoops of cream chocolate ice cream, the cherry flavor is achieved through the use of cherry jam, and then the whole Black Forest Chocolate Cherry Milkshake is topped with a sky-high helping of whipped cream!

Why Cherry Jam?

In developing this Black Forest Chocolate Cherry Milkshake recipe, I first tried using frozen black cherries in the milkshake. The results were, well, pretty flavorless. That distinctive cherry flavor was not present at all – it really just tasted like a regular chocolate milkshake. I thought about maybe using a cherry syrup, when I remembered I still had a jar of cherry jam in my fridge from making my Black Forest Loaf Cake. I popped a heaping tablespoon into the blender with the rest of the ingredients, and it was perfect! The cherry jam, as all jams are, is extremely concentrated in flavor – meaning that you get a whole lot of cherry flavor with a small amount! Its concentrated flavor and sweetness were perfect for making a Black Forest Chocolate Cherry Milkshake!

How to Make the Black Forest Chocolate Cherry Milkshake

Making this Black Forest Chocolate Cherry Milkshake is as easy as throwing everything into a blender! Seriously though – just scoop your ice cream directly into the blender, then add in the cherry jam and whole milk, and blend until it is smooth! The consistency should be thick, but not overly thick that it cannot be enjoyed with a thick straw. Pour the Black Forest Chocolate Cherry Milkshake into a large glass, or a mason jar like I did, then top with a nice helping of whipped cream, and a cherry on top! An incredibly easy, and delicious treat.
