About Me

The 411

Hi my name is Amie! Thanks for taking the time to visit my little corner of the Internet. I am a self-taught cook and baker, having learned everything I know from my mom, the food network, as well as through oddly entertaining literature on the culinary arts (some of which can be found under my recommendations tab). I am a Canadian girl, born and raised in Alberta, with Ukrainian and Scottish roots. Living in Canada truly has it’s perks – namely that it is such a beautiful mosaic of different cultures and backgrounds. This convergence of backgrounds has made Canada richer in every sense of the word, and particularly in the culinary sense. The eclectic arrays of food brought and shared here by different groups has made Canada’s food scene a force to be reckoned with! With all the different food festivals, cultural festivals (that of course always involve food), restaurants, and eclectic foods lining the grocery store aisles, I feel blessed every day to live in place where I can excite my palette each and every day. Living in the beautiful cultural mosaic that is Canada, my culinary style really reflects that. My recipes take inspiration from across the globe, and I wouldn’t have it any other way!

My Culinary Journey

My love for the culinary arts started as a relatively young child, helping my mom with simple kitchen tasks. We would spend hours in the kitchen making tooth-ache inducing sweets, such as cupcakes and cookies, but all that hard labour was always well worth it, as it was always followed by the best kind of reward – eating those amazing sweets! As I grew up I found a very real passion in baking. Beyond the decadently satisfying edible reward at the end, I found great satisfaction and fulfillment in the creative process of baking. Baking became my creative outlet, how I could express myself artistically, and it never hurt that there was always the added bonus of a delicious little treat at the end!

Why I Began Blogging

My journey with this blog began after I graduated from post-secondary, having received my degree in Business with a focus in finance. While in school, I found myself unpassionate, and frankly indifferent, about what I was taking. However, I excelled at the subject (I was always a math junkie in grade school), so I decided to stick with it until the end, just praying that it would be different once I began working. However, once I entered the workforce, my lack of passion became overbearingly apparent to me, and I knew I would be miserable in that field. Now, at this point I had realized my passion for cooking years prior, however I never thought that I was cut out to work in the culinary industry. The thought of working in such a fast paced environment that is notoriously draining, both physically and emotionally, quite honestly scared the living jeebers out of me! I then realized I could combine my two biggest passions – helping others and cooking! This blog has truly fed my soul, leaving me feeling fulfilled day in and day out. I wake up each and every day excited to jump right back in where I left off the day before. As well, this blog has helped me realize another passion of mine – photography!

Photography

Boy, when I first started this blog, I had absolutely no idea about anything photography related. I only had experience with 2 cameras in my life – my phone camera and my ancient point-and-shoot from back in the day. As such, jumping into the world of food photography was a little bewildering at first, I had no idea what lenses did what, what aperture meant, the importance of colour theory, how to properly compose a scene – none of it! The only saving grace I had was that I knew my way around Photoshop (albeit PS 2010 haha). I immersed myself in learning everything I could from other food photographers and some amazing YouTubers. But I have to admit, I am still learning to this day, and as a perfectionist I think I will always be finding some way to better myself and my photos.

Currently I shoot with a Sony A6300, with either a Sony FE-mount 50mm f/1.8 Lens, Sony 90mm f/2.8 Macro Lens, and also the Sony 16-50mm f/3.5 (kit) lens.

Hope your day is full of both food and love!
